UCEM Property Awards 2020 – Our Alumni of the Year nominees: Vincent Chan

張貼於: 2020-10-01

We will be hosting the 33rd UCEM Property Awards on Thursday, 15 October. Due to COVID-19, we will not be able to hold this in person but we will be sharing videos and announcements throughout the day on our social media channels to celebrate the achievements of our nominees and winners.

The event will see a sixth person receive our Alumni of the Year Award since it was added to the Property Awards in 2015.

The Alumni of the Year Award goes to a former UCEM student who has made an outstanding contribution in their early career towards creating a better Built Environment.

In the lead-up to 15 October, we will be profiling each of the nominees for this Award. So far, we have profiled Jonathan Bayfield, Michelle Dobson and Shane Jones, and the fourth nominee we feature is Project Manager, Vincent Chan.

Vincent Chan

Vincent first studied with UCEM in the 1990s, gaining a BSc in Estate Management which fuelled his interest in property and law. A Chartered Surveyor, Vincent also qualified as a Barrister and, after completing a Postgraduate Diploma in Arbitration at UCEM in 2014, he decided to pursue alternative dispute resolution as a further area of expertise.

Vincent is currently the Project Manager responsible for the overall running of the Building Management Dispute Resolution Scheme (BMDRS) for the Home Affairs Department of the Government of Hong Kong SAR. As building management disputes are increasingly complex, involving legal and property issues, traditional mediation has its limitations. With retired judges and judicial officers as members, the BMDRS provides non-binding opinion to parties in dispute to identify issues and explore the feasibility of options in order to reach settlements.

After running the project for over two years, the number of cases received has been over 50, with more than half of the cases resolved by signing of settlement agreements or other collaborative means.

Vincent is passionate about the promotion of mediation and the culture of positive dispute resolution in the Built Environment and society as a whole.

Reflecting on the nomination, Vincent said: “I wish to say thank you to UCEM for providing excellent academic programmes, both at undergraduate and postgraduate levels. Without the solid foundation gained by studying with UCEM, I would not have achieved all that I have up to now. Although studying with UCEM requires a high level of self-discipline, I believe that it is also this self-motivation for pursuing excellence that can continue to make aspirations fulfilled.

“I feel very honoured to be nominated. It is not only a recognition of the hard work in the past, but with this recognition in my heart, it will help me to overcome challenges in the future.”

Thanks for sharing your thoughts and best of luck, Vincent!
