Lucy Roper’s weekly Built Environment blog: Reasons to be cheerful

Posted on: 2019-03-07

Each week, UCEM Information Governance Manager, Lucy Roper points us in the direction of interesting stories from the Built Environment.

This week, Lucy decides to give news about Brexit a wide berth and instead concentrate on positive initiatives and news of a Royal visitor which offer cheer in these somewhat uncertain times.

National Apprenticeship Week

You may have seen the noise we are making on our social media channels about this week’s National Apprenticeship Week.

Since moving into the provision of further education in 2015, UCEM has continued to refine its apprenticeship programmes and now is proud to proclaim that it is the largest provider of surveying degree apprenticeships in England.

Why not find out more about National Apprenticeship Week on the government’s website and see what impact apprenticeships are having across the country.

It is the 12th annual National Apprenticeship Week and the government has chosen the theme ‘Blaze a Trail’ to mark it. Apprenticeships are continuing to make a difference and UCEM can definitely count itself a trailblazer in how it has thrown its support behind the agenda.

International Women’s Day

This Friday (8 March) is International Women’s Day marking the contributions of women worldwide and offering an opportunity for us all to reflect on the gender balance in society.

This year’s campaign theme is ‘#BalanceForBetter’ advocating a more balanced world with regards the sexes.

My alma mater recently asked what International Women’s Day means to me and I responded:

‘It is an opportunity to celebrate some of the amazing and aspirational achievements of women around the word as well as realising the great opportunities that are out there for women to take up and help improve their lives and others.’

What does it mean to you? Email me with your thoughts.

Royal visit

Finally, I couldn’t finish my round-up of positive news and events this week without mentioning tomorrow’s (Friday 8 March) visit of our Royal Patron, HRH The Prince of Wales to UCEM’s Horizons office.

Our centenary year is jam-packed with so many exciting events but entertaining The Prince of Wales will no doubt be the highlight of our celebrations.

It will very much be an honour to be visited by our Royal Patron and an occasion which will likely live long in the memories of all those involved.
