Principal Thoughts – July

Posted on: 2016-08-09

Now that July has come to a close, UCEM Principal, Ashley Wheaton, takes a look over the past month in the latest edition of our ‘Principal Thoughts’ blog series – sharing insights from the worlds of higher education, the Built Environment and beyond.

The Property industry keeps on moving

Looking back to the first of July, a number of intrepid UCEM staff members (myself included!) ran, swam and cycled in the name of the Built Environment. Each year JLL hosts the Property Triathlon, open to anyone in the Property industry, in efforts to raise money for national charities.

The triathlon has raised over £1.7 million to date, and this time round UCEM was proud to both sponsor and participate in the event. The £190,352 raised this year was donated to Starlight, a charity that pledges to brighten the lives of seriously and terminally ill children. Knowing the event was for a good cause made it even more enjoyable, and we hope to take part again next year! UCEM graduation July 2016

A big well done to our latest graduates

The following day, Saturday 2 July, we hosted our summer Presentation day. It’s always a pleasure to be able to award UCEM students with their well-deserved degrees, diplomas and certificates, and this year was no different. It was a fantastic day and I’m proud to be able to congratulate all our new graduates. I wish them the best of luck for the future.

Construction News recognises industry stars

On the 14 July Construction News held its annual awards ceremony at Grosvenor House Hotel, London – recognising hard work and success among clients and the industry supply chain. This year we were pleased to be a sponsor of the awards and Tim Bennett, our Head of Construction Faculty, attended the evening’s celebrations to represent UCEM.

Winners included Interserve Construction who cnawardswon the BIM Excellence award, Thames Water Utilities who were awarded Client of the Year and Willmott Dixon who walked away with the Sustainable Company of the Year award. It’s fantastic to be able to support the recognition of great achievements in the Construction sector. Many congratulations to all the finalists and to those who received an award.

Don’t miss out… on joining us this autumn

As we move into August, we head ever closer to our final application deadlines for those students who want to begin studying a programme this autumn. Our admissions and enquiries teams have been working hard to process lots of incoming applications – and I’m sure they’ll be busy for the next few weeks – so with limited spaces available, make sure you secure your place well ahead of the deadlines. You can visit our website for more information.

Make sure to connect with UCEM on Twitter, Facebook and LinkedIn – and stay tuned to our blog page for the next edition of Principal Thoughts.
