Associate Professor Dr Claire Hookham, MBA Programme Lead at the University of the Built Environment, has been awarded Principal Fellowship of Advance HE (PFHEA), one of the highest professional recognitions for leadership in higher education teaching and learning.
The award recognises Claire’s extensive leadership in higher education over more than two decades. During that time, she has led major curriculum transformation projects, secured international accreditation for business programmes, championed initiatives to improve student outcomes and reduce attainment gaps, supported the professional development of academic staff, and contributed to national discussions on teaching excellence and management education through a range of sector leadership roles.
Speaking about the award, Dr Hookham said she was “absolutely delighted”.
“This recognition represents the culmination of more than 20 years working in higher education – and a journey that is still very much continuing,” she said.
“I have been fortunate to work across a range of universities and roles throughout my career, each of which has shaped my understanding of teaching, learning, leadership and the student experience. Along the way, I have benefited enormously from the support, encouragement and expertise of many colleagues, mentors and collaborators, whose influence has helped me grow both professionally and personally.”
She added: “Principal Fellowship is a significant milestone, and I am grateful for the opportunity to continue contributing to the development of higher education and supporting others in the sector.”
Professor Malcolm Todd, Pro Vice-Chancellor at the University of the Built Environment, congratulated Claire on her achievement.
“Claire’s achievement is a testament to her commitment to academic excellence, educational innovation, and the enhancement of the student experience,” he said.
“This recognition is particularly significant for the University of the Built Environment as it reflects the quality of academic leadership within the institution and reinforces our commitment to excellence in teaching, learning, and student success.”
He added: “As the University continues to strengthen its reputation as a specialist, innovative and student-centred provider, achievements such as this demonstrate the expertise, leadership and professional credibility that underpin our mission and future ambitions.”
Principal Fellowship is awarded to highly experienced professionals who have demonstrated sustained strategic leadership and significant impact on learning, teaching and the student experience across higher education.
It is aligned to Descriptor 4 of the Professional Standards Framework (PSF 2023), recognising individuals whose influence extends beyond their own institution.
Claire is the programme lead for the University’s specialist MBA, designed for ambitious professionals in the built environment seeking to accelerate their career progression to senior management. Find out more here:
